Why We Made the Una Paperbag Pant — And Why Organic Denim Matters

At SÔZ Studios, we design clothing using organic and natural fibers for a reason: most clothes are made of plastic. Polyester, nylon, acrylic — all synthetic materials derived from petroleum. That means when you wear them, you’re wearing plastic. When you wash them, you're releasing microplastics into the water. And when they break down, they don’t.

The Una Paperbag Pant is our answer to that.

A Better Pant, Made from Organic Denim

The Una Pant is made from 100% Italian organic cotton denim. It’s undyed, 10oz in weight, and soft without giving up structure. It wears well in heat, breathes naturally, and softens with time. It's available in Natural, Navy, and Olive — each color made from the same organic cotton, milled in Italy, and sewn in a women-owned factory in Los Angeles.

The fit features a paperbag waist with an adjustable tie that gives up to 4 inches of flexibility — across all sizes, from XS to XL. It’s designed to accommodate the way we live. More meals, more movement, more ease. The pant is high-rise, wide-leg, and built for everyday wear, dressed up or down.

What Is a Paperbag Waist?

A paperbag waist is a style that dates back to the early 1980s. The design gathers fabric at the waistband, cinching it with a belt or tie to create a soft pleated shape. It adds structure without stiffness — and in our version, the tie provides size range flexibility without relying on elastic or synthetics.

Why Organic Cotton Is Better — For You and the Environment

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. According to the Textile Exchange, organic farming uses significantly less water, protects soil health, and avoids toxic runoff that pollutes rivers and oceans.

But it’s not just about the environment.

Synthetic fabrics are made from petrochemicals. A 2021 study published in Environmental Science & Technology found that the average U.S. adult may inhale up to 16.2 microplastic particles per hour, many of which come from synthetic clothing fibers. When you choose natural fabrics, you’re not just making a better environmental choice — you’re making a better personal one.

Luxury fashion doesn’t have to compromise on sustainability — for your health or for the planet.

You can wear well-made, beautiful clothes and still respect the natural systems they come from.

Why We Made It

The Una Pant is named after my daughter. I started designing it right around the time she was born. I didn’t want a throwaway pant. I wanted a piece you could build a wardrobe around — minimal, durable, comfortable, and made from the best natural materials we could source.

We also designed a matching Nico Jacket, made in the same fabric and colorways, for a full look that holds up in both city and coast settings.

Why This Blog Exists

We’re building something at SÔZ Studios: a menswear brand focused on organic materials, ethical production, and long-term design. This blog is the first in a series that aims to do three things:

  • Educate: about the benefits of wearing natural fibers and how most menswear is failing you.
  • Elevate: SÔZ Studios as the leading voice in organic, U.S.-made menswear.
  • From Sketch to Stitch: share how we source, design, and produce—openly and honestly.
